Before Laser Hair Removal: Shaving, Waxing and Tanning

Before your appointment, check more than shaving timing. Tell the clinic about recent waxing, tanning, skin irritation and medicines so preparation can be reviewed for your situation.

Hello from RE:NINE Clinic.

“How much should I shave before my visit?” Hair length is often the first concern before laser hair removal. It helps to share how you last removed the hair and whether your skin has recently changed, too.

Check shaving and waxing separately

Shaving cuts hair at the skin surface; waxing and plucking remove it from the root. These are different preparations. Mayo Clinic's guidance distinguishes shaving from methods that pull hair out.

Ask your clinic when to shave and what length to leave. If you have already waxed or plucked, give the area, method and date. Avoid repeated, hurried shaving that could leave cuts.

Mention tanning, sunburn and irritation

Your usual skin colour and a recent tan are different considerations. Tell the clinic about outdoor exposure, tanning beds, sunless tanning products or sunburn. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises discussing recent tanning and following sun-protection instructions.

Point out shaving cuts, redness or stinging and when they started. Even if your appointment is approaching, your skin needs to be assessed before treatment suitability is decided.

Bring medicine names and recent changes

Prepare a list of prescription medicines, non-prescription medicines and skin products. Include the name and start date of anything recently added or changed. Leeds Teaching Hospitals advises reporting medicines and changes in health before treatment.

Do not stop medication on your own to prepare for laser treatment. Any adjustment needs advice from the prescribing and treating clinicians. Also describe previous treatment reactions in the same area.

Make a short note before your visit

  • The area you want treated and your last shave, wax or plucking date.
  • Recent tanning, sunburn or skin irritation.
  • Medicines, skin products and recent changes.
  • Previous treatment reactions and upcoming travel or outdoor plans.

An approximate date is useful if you cannot remember the exact one. This helps the clinic review preparation and timing; a booking does not itself confirm same-day treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still attend if I have not shaved?

It depends on the clinic's preparation instructions, the area and your skin. Contact the clinic before travelling. Explain your situation rather than rushing to shave and causing cuts.

When can I have laser treatment after waxing?

Share when and where you last waxed and ask for timing advice. There is no single waiting period for every situation. A little visible hair does not by itself confirm readiness for treatment.

Must I cancel if I have tanned or started a new medicine?

Tell the clinic before deciding for yourself. Assessment may lead to a change in the plan or appointment timing. Do not discontinue medicine on your own.

Ask RE:NINE about your preparation

For your enquiry, include the intended area, last hair-removal date and method, recent skin changes and medicines. This gives the clinic a useful starting point for discussing your visit.
