Lip Filler: What to Discuss for a Naturally Balanced Look
Before choosing an amount, discuss the changes you want, previous treatments and recovery plans for a lip filler consultation.

Do your lips look thin, or does their shape when you smile concern you? Before asking how many millilitres of filler to use, explain which part of your lip appearance you would like to change.
At RE:NINE Clinic, a consultation considers balance within your face and expressions as well as volume. Describe the changes you want in your own lips rather than expecting another person’s exact shape.
Start with the look you want
Upper and lower lip thickness, the lip border, differences between sides and the shape of your smile are distinct concerns. Clarifying whether you want more overall volume or a change in a particular contour helps guide the discussion.
Reference photos can communicate a preference, but an identical result may not be achievable. Your existing lips and facial proportions affect the plan.

Choose a plan, not a fixed amount
Hyaluronic acid fillers can add lip volume and support contours. One amount is not suitable for everyone, and more filler does not automatically look more natural. Ask about the proposed product, its suitability, the amount planned and follow-up.
If you are also concerned about your mouth corners, distinguish what filler is intended to address from what needs a different assessment. Combining treatments is not automatically necessary.
Share your treatment and health history
- Mention previous lip filler dates, products, known amounts and reactions.
- Disclose allergies, recurring cold sores, medicines and supplements.
- Do not stop prescribed medication on your own; discuss any changes with your clinician.
Remaining filler should be assessed before deciding to add more or remove it. It is fine to say when you do not remember a detail. See the American Academy of Dermatology’s consultation guidance.
Include recovery and warning signs in the discussion
Swelling, bruising and tenderness can occur, with individual variation. Do not judge the final shape immediately. Follow your clinic’s care and review instructions, and mention important travel or photography dates before booking.
Rare vascular complications can damage tissue or vision. Unusual pain, white or grey-blue skin, or vision changes require immediate medical attention. See the FDA’s filler safety guidance.

Frequently asked questions
Can 1 mL achieve the lips I want?
An amount alone cannot determine the result. Existing thickness, asymmetry, your goals and product characteristics all inform the plan.
Must my previous filler be dissolved?
Not in every case. Remaining filler, tissue condition and previous reactions should be assessed before deciding whether another treatment or action is needed.
How long does one treatment last?
Duration varies with the product, amount and individual condition. No fixed period is guaranteed. Ask how to monitor changes and when a further consultation may be useful.
