Before Dark Spot Laser Treatment: Changes That Need a Skin Check

Before choosing pico toning or laser treatment for dark spots, find out what the mark is. Changes in a mole’s size, shape or colour, itching or bleeding are reasons to arrange a medical assessment first.

A small brown mark in the mirror may make you wonder whether pico toning or a dark spot laser could fade it. Yet marks with a similar colour are not necessarily the same condition. Following our guides to pigment consultation and laser aftercare, this article focuses on changes that should be assessed before cosmetic treatment.

Similar colours do not mean the same condition

Melasma, sun-related pigmentation and moles can look similar but may need different approaches. The American Academy of Dermatology advises having skin examined before treating what appears to be an age spot, because other conditions can look similar.

This does not mean every brown mark is dangerous. Most moles are benign. However, appearance alone is not a sound basis for deciding what a mark is or choosing the laser and number of sessions.

Arrange an assessment for a changing mole

Book a medical appointment rather than waiting to fit a cosmetic treatment schedule if you notice:

  • A change in size, shape or colour, or an uneven-looking border or colour pattern
  • New itching or pain
  • Bleeding, crusting, oozing or another change to the surface

These signs do not by themselves diagnose skin cancer. They do mean an examination is needed to distinguish an ordinary mark from a lesion needing further assessment. Also mention a persistent new mark or one that feels different from before.

A small size or long history is not enough to decide

A mole is not automatically harmless simply because it is small or has been present for years. Its current appearance, changes over time and your medical history all matter. Equally, resemblance to an online photograph cannot establish a diagnosis.

Have a concerning area examined and ask about any necessary tests before trying to fade it with a laser or strong lightening products. A clinician decides whether further testing or monitoring is needed after assessing it.

Bring a history of changes as well as photographs

Note when the mark first appeared, what changed and when symptoms such as itching or bleeding began. Older photographs taken in similar lighting and records of previous procedures or treatment can help explain the history. Photographs document changes; they do not replace an examination.

If further assessment is advised, complete that first and discuss cosmetic treatment in light of the findings.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Can a mole present for years be removed with a laser straight away?

Its age alone is not enough to decide. Have its recent changes and current condition assessed before discussing removal. A changing mole should be evaluated before cosmetic treatment.

Q. Can a photograph tell whether it is melasma or a mole?

Photographs can help show the location and changes but cannot establish an individual diagnosis or which tests are needed. Seek an examination for symptoms or changes rather than waiting only for a photograph-based reply.

Q. Does every mole need a biopsy?

There is no single test plan for every mole. A clinician decides whether further testing or monitoring is needed after examination. If testing is advised, confirm the findings before discussing cosmetic treatment.
