Pigment Laser Aftercare: Sun Protection, Moisture and Flaking

Wondering what to apply or when to wear makeup after a pigment laser session? Start with the treatment you received and your skin’s condition. Here are care principles and changes to discuss with your clinic.

After a laser appointment, simple questions matter: Can I wash my face today? Should I use my usual products if my skin stings? Even treatments described as “pico” can involve different approaches and skin responses.

If you have been looking at the Pico Eraser listing on RE:NINE Clinic’s website, discuss your aftercare plans as well as the procedure. This article covers general principles after pigment laser treatment; the instructions for your particular treatment come first.

Confirm the approach used on your skin

Toning over a broader area and targeted treatment of individual spots can affect the skin surface differently. Melasma and other pigmented lesions also need to be distinguished.

Before starting cleansing, cosmetics or protective products, check whether the skin is intact, weeping or covered by a dressing. A friend’s experience or a single “days after laser” rule may not apply to you.

Sun protection means more than sunscreen

Reducing sun exposure matters in melasma care. The American Academy of Dermatology describes shade, hats and broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Once your skin can tolerate and is cleared for topical products, follow the product and application advice you were given.

If the skin is broken or weeping, ask when sunscreen can be applied and how to protect the area in the meantime. For melasma, visible-light protection may also be relevant; ask whether a tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide suits your skin. Do not keep applying a product that causes stinging.

Keep cleansing gentle and check when to restart actives

When cleansing and moisturising are permitted, minimise friction rather than scrubbing. Choose gentle products that suit your skin and avoid introducing several new products at once.

Ask when to resume retinol or exfoliating products. Do not stop or change prescribed medicines or ointments on your own. The timing for makeup, exercise and saunas depends on the procedure and healing, too.

Do not hurry flakes or crusts off

If flaking or crusting occurs, do not pick or rub it away. Not every pico treatment produces crusts, and crusting is not proof that a treatment worked.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals’ laser aftercare information also advises avoiding friction and contacting the treatment team about changes such as blisters or weeping. Contact the clinic that treated you if pain, redness or swelling worsens, or blisters or weeping develop. Its specific product and activity restriction timelines should not be copied to every pico treatment.

Three questions before leaving

  • When may I cleanse and use moisturiser, sunscreen and makeup after my particular treatment?
  • How should I manage my usual active products and prescribed medicines?
  • Which changes should I report, and how can I contact the clinic while travelling?

Share the dates of outdoor sightseeing, photo shoots or swimming. Check whether the care plan fits your schedule rather than assuming treatment must go ahead during your trip.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Can I wear makeup the next day?

There is no universal answer. Check the condition of the skin surface, any dressing and the procedure performed, then follow your clinician’s timing.

Q. No crusts formed. Does that mean it did not work?

No. Responses vary with the treatment and your skin. Crusts alone cannot determine results or the need for another session.

Q. Will one session prevent pigmentation from returning?

That cannot be guaranteed. Distinguish melasma from other pigment concerns and discuss daily care and follow-up.
